An issue arose at the handheld training at St Edward’s RC Primary on Friday afternoon. The handhelds could not connect to the internet even though they were connected to the school’s network. The solution to this problem is as follows; when configuring the network in settings (choosing which network needs to be accessed), make sure that ‘My network card connects to:’ work. This is because the handheld needs to be linked to the proxy server in the school. If there is a problem accessing the internet at home then this can be changed back to ‘My network card connects to:’ The Internet. This should work!

I took the device home last night and it automatically found the internet without me having to change any settings on the handheld itself, so that wasn’t too bad!

Graeme,
you say your device ‘found the internet’ without you having to change settings.
You should be aware that a mobile wireless enabled device actively seeks access points, and can attempt a connection.
If your device connected to the internet at home - as you report- then you have security problems with your home network.
No device can connect to the internet without knowing the WEP key for the LAN, you must be making the key available ‘automatically’ on your home network. My advice is to secure your LAN.
